Individual Gifts

Did you know that the Sacramento Opera must raise nearly $4,000 a day to keep our doors open and the curtain up on incredible opera performances throughout the year? Did you know that your ticket price covers only about 60% of our operating costs and the rest must be raised from the generous and dedicated contributions of individuals just like you?

(P.S. Do you work for a company that matches charitable contributions? You may be able to double the impact of your donation to the Sacramento Opera. Ask your employer for a matching gift form.)

Gifts of Stocks and Bonds

Appreciated stocks and bonds are, next to cash, one of the most popular assets donated to Sacramento Opera. Making a gift of securities is both simple and tax-effective.

Income Tax Advantages
Appreciated securities:
If you own appreciated stock, it is almost always tax-wise to contribute stock to Sacramento Opera rather than cash. You should check with your tax advisor on the particular tax rules that apply and how they relate to your individual circumstances, but if you itemize your deductions, gifts of securities generally offer two advantages: (1) an income tax deduction for the full fair-market value if you have held the stock for more than a year; (2) avoids the capital gains tax on appreciated securities.

Depreciated securities:
If you hold securities that have declined in value, it generally is advisable to sell the securities to establish a tax loss and then donate the proceeds to Sacramento Opera.

Transfer and Valuation of Your Gift
Sacramento Opera will value your publicly traded securities as of the day that you or your broker completes the securities transfer from your account. The valuation of the gift will be based on the mean-market value of the securities on the date of gift. Please be aware that transfers involving mutual fund shares, closely held stock, or other non-public securities, foreign financial instruments, or institutions, or institutions require additional steps and can take up to fifteen (15) business days to complete.

Transfer Instructions
Sacramento Opera will require the following information from you or your broker: the description of the securities to be transferred, the CUSIP number, the number of shares or certificates, and purpose of your gift (unrestricted gift or other).

Before the transfer is made, fax 916.737.1032 or e-mail this information to mcirone@sacopera.org

A representative of Sacramento Opera will contact you or your broker with specific account information necessary to complete your transaction.
