Opera – it really is for everyone
By Edward Ortiz, August 30, 2009
"As an arts patron, sooner or later, you face the question: to the opera or not to opera? Sadly, many opt out, thinking opera is too stuffy, requires a tux and demands command of Italian, French or German. But nothing could be further from the truth." Read the article.

About The Elixir of Love Stage Director José Maria Condemi

José Maria Condemi has been hailed by the Oakland Post as "one of the most promising and impressive directors in all opera," and the Seattle Weekly calls his production of La Bohème for Seattle Opera "flawless," "handsome," and "impressively crafted." In the 2008-09 Season Mr. Condemi directed Tristan und Isolde at Lyric Opera of Chicago, Orfeo ed Euridice for West Bay Opera, Le nozze di Figaro for Livermore Valley Opera, L'elisir d'amore and Tosca for San Francisco Opera, a new Die Zauberflöte for Opera San José, and the world premiere of Don Davis's Río de Sangre for Florentine Opera. In summer of 2009 he directed Ainadamar for Cincinnati Opera. In 2009-10, his engagements include directing a new production of Ernani for Lyric Opera of Chicago, Il trovatore for Seattle Opera, and Faust for San Francisco Opera.
Sacramento Opera recently asked José Maria Condemi how he got interested in directing opera. He said, "I got interested in directing opera purely by chance. I have always been into music in general and classical music as a pianist since age six but not really into opera. I was living back home in Buenos Aires, Argentina and was actually studying to become a doctor. Until one day I went to a record store and heard the final duet of Carmen. (The recording was of Agnes Baltsa and Jose Carreras.) I immediately fell in love with it. Opera became a passion and almost obsession. After two years of becoming an opera nut, I quit medical school and enrolled at the Teatro Colon, our main opera house, and pursued my first degree in opera directing before moving to the United States for my Master's at the University of Cincinnati, and my ensuing work with San Francisco Opera as an Adler Fellow (first director ever)."
