“One of the
twentieth century’s enduring masterpieces.” —Leo Phillips, The New Grove
Dictionary of Opera
Setting: Bly, a country house, about the middle of the 19th century
A tale of good versus evil, natural versus the supernatural, and possession and
exorcism. A revealing story of two children and their young, inexperienced
governess, isolated at a remote English estate called Bly; and of an unfolding
horror that will leave you questioning whether the events are real or the
figments of a neurotic and lurid imagination. Based on the Henry James novella,
Benjamin Britten’s musical score is rich in sophistication and
complexity—heightening the tension that spirals throughout this masterpiece of
psychological terror.
First performed in Venice, La Fenice, September 14, 1954
