Each season, the Sacramento Opera offers a variety of education and outreach programs for youth and adults. Programs are specially tailored to the needs and interests of each group.

Opera Talks

Become an “Insider.” Informative and engaging, Opera Talks gives you an insightful look at an upcoming production of the Sacramento Opera. Each Opera Talk is hosted by the General Director and features interactive discussions with conductors, stage directors, and singers, including a performance by one of the principal guest artists appearing in the production. Talks run from 60 to 90 minutes in length and take a fascinating, “behind-the-footlights” look at the world of opera.

Scheduled Talks:

  • Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville), Wednesday, November 7, 2012, 7:30 p.m.
  • Puccini: The Man and His Muses & Gianni Schicchi, Wednesday, February 13, 2013, 7:30 p.m.

Opera-Tunities for Youth

Opera-Tunities programs introduce students to the wonders of opera through a series of age-specific programs. In consultation with education specialists, artists and staff, Sacramento Opera has developed an inter-disciplinary program designed to introduce students to opera and to relate the art form to other core curriculum subjects including history, cultural studies, language and the visual arts.

Each participating school may be provided with:

  • Outlines for activities and study areas
  • Age-specific lesson plans
  • Video/audio tape excerpt highlights of upcoming Sacramento Opera productions
  • Other materials that may enhance the program including coloring pages, crossword puzzles and games, historical information and stories.

Program materials are designed to help classroom teachers use the study of the opera and visits by artists to relate to other classroom subjects. Teachers can use these materials to prepare the students for an Opera-Tunities visit by one or two professional singer(s) and a pianist. The artists perform and discuss operatic music, technique, the history and tradition of opera performance, production and career opportunities.

Fee: $300 per presentation. Limited to 300 students per presentation. Multiple presentation discounts are available by school and by school district.

Note: fee subsidy may be available for schools within the Sacramento Unified School district, and the Twin Rivers Unified School District through the “Any Given Child” initiative. To see if your school qualifies, contact Erika Kraft, Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission, at ekraft@cityofsacramento.org, or call 916.808.3983.

Student Night at the Opera

Student Night at the Opera provides classroom teachers and their students access to the final dress rehearsal of the Sacramento Opera’s main stage productions at very low cost. The final dress rehearsal typically features a complete run through of the company’s upcoming production, including performances by opera singers and the Sacramento Philharmonic. Experience the thrill of live opera with the cast and chorus in full costume and makeup. Student Night at the Opera participants have a rare opportunity to experience set transformations and often have a chance to meet the stage director, conductor and some of the artists and crew.
