Conducted by Michael Morgan with the Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra and the Sacramento Opera Chorus

The first half of the program will showcase the Sacramento Philharmonic in works influenced by the lyric stage. In the second half, stage and life collide violently in a “play within a play.” An itinerant commedia dell’arte theater troupe is preparing for a comedy about a man, his wife and her lover, mirrored by a deadly real-life drama that ensues off stage. Allegedly based on a real incident, the show is dramatic and emotionally intense. Leoncavallo underscores the action with lush and expansive orchestral music, tuneful choruses, and one of the most heart-wrenching songs in the operatic repertory - “Vesti la giubba.”

A concise, taut, and psychologically disturbing drama about a “corrupted clown who belittles the misfortune of others, keeps his beloved daughter Gilda under lock and key, and takes out a contract on his employer who has designs on Gilda.” (LA Times) The show concludes with a twist that is as shocking as it is horrifying. Rigoletto is one of Verdi’s greatest works and is filled with an unforgettable array of remarkable tunes. This opera is a great introduction to the art form and beloved by seasoned patrons.
